HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR! January 31st begins the 4712th year on the Chinese calendar. You could be super pumped, or maybe you’re like, wait, what? What is the Chinese New Year? Well, the Chinese New Year (CNY for those in the know) is the most important celebration on the Chinese calendar. It’s also the longest celebrated holiday, traditionally lasting fifteen days. The Chinese calendar is based off the lunar calendar, with each month beginning on the new moon—the darkest day of the month—and ending the day before the next new moon.

CNY is most known in America for its awesome, colorful, and party-like parades. Chinese dragon parade floats are usually the main attraction in the parades and can consist of anything from a couple of guys with sticks connected to a long snake-like thing, which they hold over their heads, or full-on dragon floats consisting of a bunch of people in line under the “body” of a dragon. In San Francisco, the finale of the CNY parade is the Golden Dragon—a giant dragon float with 29 body sections, requiring a team of 100 people to operate, with a 6-foot-long head! Being one of the 100 people picked to work the Golden Dragon for the finale is a HUGE honor and privilege. People prepare weeks in advance for the big day. So, we thought we’d make a little primer of the DOs and DON’Ts for being inside a Chinese dragon parade float for all the newbies making up the internal organs of a rad mythological beast this year!

DON’T fart. Unless you are the last guy in the line, making up the actual bootie of the dragon. If that’s the case, go for it, but if you’re positioned near the head of the dragon, you better clench those butt cheeks! No on wants to be stuck in a farty-dragon.

DO follow the guy in front of you.

DON’T go in the opposite direction of the person in front of you, making it look like the dragon’s liver just decided to try and escape the body.

DON’T dress up like Bilbo Baggins and then halfway through the parade, bust out of the side of the dragon, run in front of it and scream “I’ve got the Arkenstone! I’ve taken the Arkenstone!”

DO wear plain shoes with no branding. Your feet will be showing under the float, and dragons aren’t Nike OR Adidas fans. Hard to believe, but true.

DON’T smell the hair of the person in front of you. Or try and brush their hair, for that matter.

DON’T attempt the stunning spell on the dragon. Sure it worked for Charlie Weasley in the Triwizard Tournament, but this isn’t Hogwarts!

DO offer to play a game of telephone while you all wait for the parade to start. You’re already in the perfect formation! It just makes sense, people.

DON’T say, “Wanna smell some dragon breath?” No one, we repeat, no one wants to smell your garlic breath, Steve.

DON’T stick your head out from underneath the dragon during the parade to “just see what’s going on outside!” A kid is going to see you and be scared for life ("Mommy! Mommy! A poor man is trying to escape the dragon's belly!").

DON’T start yelling “NOT A DINOSAUR! NOT A DINOSAUR!”

DO some pushups a few weeks before the big event. You’re gonna need arm and shoulder strength to hold that costume up!

DON’T run up to the dragon shouting “Norbert! Norbert! My favorite Norwegian Ridgeback! Hagrid said I should have a peak under your ceremonial skirts.” Lift up the back of the dragon, stick your head under and emerge solemnly, stating “You’ve been Norberta this whole time.”

DO eat a big meal before hand. Energy!

DO shower the day of the parade. You’re going to be very close to people. We can not stress this enough! When you’re making up the body of a dragon hygiene is very important.

DON’T put on a bikini and try to ride the dragon and then when asked to leave by security say “I’m a dragon babe! C’m’on! But I’m a BABE who rides DRAGONS!”
